GUIDANCE OF YOUNG CHILDREN
Parents often wonder what type of discipline is used. Discipline usually refers to the process of setting limits on a child’s inappropriate behaviour. Here at the Mattawa Child Care Centre we believe that children will develop social skills when they become more aware of the impact of their actions on others.
Consistency is very important for young children. Regular routines, constant care, consistency in educators, clearly defined limits and expectations will help your child to develop an internal sense of discipline.
Our goal is to help children develop their internal controls without threatening their self-esteem. Therefore, our method is to show the children alternative, appropriate behaviour, avoiding labelling or judgemental language.
We redirect the children to other areas and activities using positive language in a positive manner that is respectful of the child’s level of development. Even when we are imposing limits, we try to do it in a way that acknowledges the child’s feelings. i.e. “I see that you’re upset, but I can’t let you hit”, “Let’s go to the sandbox and build a sand castle.”
Physical punishment is never used and a “time-out” is only used when all traditional methods of behaviour management have been exhausted.
